This will be through the medium of a firm idea based on understanding. Through repeated inference you will gain a thorough familiarity with the meaning of Identitylessness. When you have achieved a state of mental quiescence and the higher attainments of meditative concentration, you can then focus your single-minded concentration on your fully confident and familiar conceptual understanding. This will then be the conceptual cognition of Identitylessness that arises from meditation. If in addition to the collection of insight you have accumulated from such meditational practice as this, you have also built up a vast collection of merit from having done many virtuous deeds with pure motivation over a long period of time, you will then as a result achieve bare yogic perception.

One is that) bare sensory and mental perception arise in alternation and (the other is) the way that Gyan (K'an-po) asserts bare mental perception, namely that three go together. Neither of these are accepted by our own tradition, which asserts instead that it arises only at the end of a stream of continuity of bare sensory perception. According to the explanation tradition of alternating arisal, you first have a valid initial phase of bare visual perception of a vase, for instance. This is followed by alternating moments of subsequent visual and bare mental perceptions of the vase, one after the other.

The Indian master Gyan K'an-po explained, however, that after an initial phase of valid bare visual perception you have three cognitions going together, namely simultaneous subsequent visual cognition, bare mental perception and the bare perception of awareness of consciousness. The tradition followed here does not accept either position. Rather it asserts that, following this initial valid phase of bare visual perception, there is a second phase of subsequent visual cognition ending with a moment of inattentive bare perception.
